The M. L. King County Labor Council, AFL-CIO, is the central body of labor organizations in King County, Washington. We are affiliated with the National AFL-CIO, the central labor organization in the United States, representing more than 13 million working people. Over 150 organizations belong to the Council, and more than 75,000 working men and women belong to Council-affiliated organizations. United, we are a voice for the interests and needs of working people in King County.
The core responsibilities of the M. L. King County Labor Council are to assist workers and their unions in the struggle for social and economic justice; support efforts to organize and bargain fair contracts; lobby, endorse and involve working people in the political process; advocate and support laws that protect working people; support community services outreach work; and unite with community allies who are also struggling for justice.
Each Council-affiliated organization elects delegates to the M. L. King County Labor Council as representatives of their union, giving their union's members a voice within the Council. Delegates are an important source of information for their locals concerning Council activities. All told, more than 200 union delegates comprise the M. L. King County Labor Council. Meetings are held on the third Wednesday of each month at 7:00 p.m. in Hall One of the Seattle Labor Temple, 2800 First Avenue, unless otherwise indicated. Every three years, the Council holds elections for officers, trustees, trade section representatives and constituency group representatives. These individuals make up the Executive Board, which meets twice monthly to consider requests from affiliates and other Council business. Trade section representatives are appointed by the unions that make up the individual sections. The entire Council body nominates candidates and votes to fill the other positions. The executive secretary is the principal officer and full-time staff person of the Council.
